ABSTRACT

Youth generally refers to individuals in the period of adolescence, a developmental stage marked by the biological changes of puberty and the transition from childhood to adulthood. Adolescence is therefore understood as a phase in which young people work toward forming a stable identity and acquiring the skills necessary for mature social life. A central goal of youth guidance is to support this process by helping adolescents build a healthy sense of self, adjust harmoniously to society, and move toward developmental growth that bridges the gap between ideals and reality. The term multicultural youth initially referred mainly to children of international marriages who were born in Korea and had one Korean parent. Today, however, the category encompasses a far more diverse population, including youth from foreign worker families, North Korean defector families, immigrant youth with overseas Korean backgrounds, and internationally adopted youth. These young people, like their peers in the majority population, require protection, support, and access to education suited to their needs and developmental levels so that they can grow into capable members of society. This article examines the wide range of challenges faced by multicultural youth in contemporary Korea and explores strategies for improving counseling and career-support systems to help them overcome these difficulties.
