ABSTRACT

This study proposes a model for restructuring Korean language and culture education around glocal regional culture through the use of generative AI. The study responds to the urgent need to support the local settlement of international students in the context of a declining school-age population and increasing regional depopulation. It critiques the existing curriculum for its strong emphasis on universal content centered on Seoul and the metropolitan area, which often fails to reflect the lived realities and practical needs of students residing in non-metropolitan regions. As an alternative, the study links locality, understood as the identity of the region in which learners live, with globality as a framework of shared universal values. It organizes regional cultural literacy into three dimensions—information, practice, and creation— and positions generative AI as a cognitive assistant and discourse mediator. On this basis, the study presents an AI-assisted teaching model that aims to foster international students as active glocal citizens.
