ABSTRACT

This study examines the patriarchal figure in the late Joseon family structure through Baejwasu in Janghwa Hongryeon Jeon, focusing on the rights and duties assigned to the patriarch and the conflicts and violence produced within that system. In late Joseon society, the Neo-Confucian family order and lineage-centered structure concentrated both authority and responsibility in the patriarch, especially with regard to remarriage, lineage succession, and the preservation of family honor. Within this framework, Baejwasu appears as the head of the household, yet he fails to mediate internal tensions and instead prioritizes familial reputation. His decisions ultimately lead to the death of Janghwa, while the deaths of Janghwa and Hongryeon and the injury of Jangsoe reveal how patriarchal authority operates as a mechanism of violence affecting the entire household. This study argues that Baejwasu should be understood not simply as an individual perpetrator, but exposing the structural violence embedded in the patriarchal family system.
