ABSTRACT

This article reexamines An Seou’s “Yuwon Sibigok” from the perspectives of textual criticism and an actor-centered approach. Based on the newly verified original text of Yanggijae Sango, it argues that “Yuwon Sibigok” consists of twelve sijo, not thirteen, and that the poem previously regarded as a prologue is an independent work. It also shows that the final poem, marked “ Right, Chapter 12,” forms an integral part of the sequence. Reconsidering An Seou’s official career, the study argues that the work was composed during 1712–1715, when he stayed in Yuwon, Jecheon, and reflected on the tension between public office and retirement. Through an analysis of recurring diction and paired composition, it demonstrates that the sequence persistently stages this inner conflict. Rather than simply celebrating nature or expressing political resentment, “Yuwon Sibigok” reveals a literati subject who continues to waver, thereby preserving unresolved tension to the end.
