ABSTRACT

This study reexamines the content, structure, and generic status of “YeolnyeoHamyangParkSejeon” by focusing on the author’s strategic mode of composition. The text has generated diverse interpretations because it brings together multiple issues, including female virtue, chastity ideology, and suicide, while also inviting different perspectives from its historical context, the author Park Ji-won, and later readers. This article argues that the work was not intended to endorse the ideology of the virtuous woman. Rather, Park Ji-won sought to express compassion for a middle-class woman driven by Confucian norms toward self-destruction and to criticize a social ethos that equated female virtue with suicide. The study further shows that the text combines factual and fictional elements in a way that resists classification as either a conventional biography or a novel. Its displaced commentary, inserted contrastive episode, and unusual paratextual framing reveal a deliberately evasive and highly calculated narrative structure.
