ABSTRACT

This study reexamines the literary significance of the historical tales (yadam) of Cha Sang-chan, a prominent journalist and storyteller during the Japanese colonial period, through Volume 5 of the Complete Collection of Korean Historical Tales and Narratives (Hanguk Yadam Sahwa Jeonjip). Published posthumously in 1959, this volume is more than a simple compilation of his writings; it is a significant resource that reveals deliberate editorial and narrative revision. The study classifies the tales included in the volume and compares them with their earlier versions published in other media in order to identify patterns of change, including the deletion of historical criticism, the addition of evaluative commentary on characters, and shifts in narrative structure. By tracing these revisions, the article examines the narrative strategies and editorial intentions embodied in the collection. It ultimately reassesses Cha Sang-chan’s effort to reconcile historical consciousness with storytelling and repositions his work within the history of Korean yadam and narrative literature.
