ABSTRACT

This study highlights the need to reexamine the dialects of central and northern Yeongseo in Gangwon-do, particularly those spoken in Chuncheon, Hwacheon, Inje, Yanggu, and Cheorwon. While previous dialect research has focused primarily on the Yeongdong region because of its distinct tonal features, these Yeongseo areas have remained relatively understudied and are often simplistically classified as sub-varieties of the Gyeonggi dialect. In fact, they constitute a transitional zone marked by distinctive phonological and lexical features. Existing data are largely limited to individual surveys conducted in the 1980s and 1990s and a small number of recent reports, leaving a substantial research gap amid rapid linguistic change. Given population aging, regional decline, and the decreasing number of native speakers, urgent documentation is required. Future research should adopt micro-level fieldwork based on natural and living zones, integrate regional audiovisual materials, and establish a sustainable research infrastructure led by regional hub universities.
