ABSTRACT

This study examines the representation and narrative functions of shamans and shamanism in two 2025 Korean television dramas, SBS “The Ghost Palace”(Guigung) and tvN “Gyeonyu and the Fairy”. While earlier Korean occult content often treated shamanism as a conventional horror device, these dramas reposition the shaman as a central figure and broaden the scope of its symbolic meaning. The analysis focuses on characterization and ritual function. First, both dramas employ the concept of the Momjusin(guardian deity) to structure conflict between a benevolent shaman who resolves spiritual crises and a malevolent shaman who manipulates harmful spirits for personal gain. Second, both foreground Cheondogut, a ritual for guiding the dead, rather than Western-style exorcism. Spirits are depicted not as objects of elimination but as beings whose forgotten histories and unresolved resentment must be addressed. These dramas ultimately present the shaman as both a source of social anxiety and a mediator of healing, reconciliation, and social integration.
