ABSTRACT

This study investigates the potential role of Grit, defined as sustained passion and perseverance toward long-term goals, in the development of reading competence. It examines the conceptual framework and major attributes of Grit and explores how these attributes relate to the cognitive, motivational, and behavioral capacities required for reading development. From the perspective of reading education, Grit and reading competence are closely interconnected and mutually reinforcing, making it difficult to draw a clear boundary between them. The analysis suggests that Grit contributes meaningfully to the improvement of reading competence by supporting persistence in reading, sustained engagement with texts, and the gradual development of reading ability over time. In particular, the altruistic dimension of Grit is closely aligned with the broader aims of reading education, as it fosters the formation of mature lifelong readers. These findings indicate the need for future research to design, implement, and evaluate educational programs that integrate Grit-related factors into reading education.
