AB - The expansion of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping higher education beyond instructional innovation, influencing campus infrastructure, assessment systems, disciplinary organization, and university–industry relations. Universities are introducing multi-LLM environments, integrated information platforms, and strengthened internal data governance, marking a shift from passive technology adoption to institutional management and oversight. In the educational sphere, widespread student use of AI has prompted formal guidelines requiring transparent documentation of usage and greater emphasis on process-based evaluation. At the disciplinary level, AI-focused colleges and specialized tracks are expanding, while the humanities and social sciences pursue strategies of critical engagement rather than exclusion.
These developments unfold within broader national innovation policies, industrial transformation, and global competition, intensifying strategic differentiation among institutions. This study examines these structural shifts and proposes a strategic direction for Kangwon National University as a regional flagship institution.
It argues that sustainable AI integration should align with regional industrial strengths and distinctive assets, including DMZ-related research and Gangwon’s cultural heritage. The central challenge is not the speed of technological adoption but the establishment of long-term institutional frameworks grounded in regional realities and the university’s social responsibility.
