AB - As regional decline and demographic transformation reshape higher education in Korea, universities are increasingly expected to move beyond classroom-centered instruction and engage more closely with local communities. Within this context, residential humanities and general education has emerged as an educational approach that uses local places, culture, and everyday life as sites of learning while encouraging both regional understanding and humanistic reflection. This study examines “3Days Humanities and General Education Class: Learning and Resting in Samcheok,” a program organized by the Samcheok Library of Kangwon National University under the Glocal University initiative.
Structured around the concept of learncation, which combines learning with leisure, the program connects local history, community spaces, and humanities lectures in a sequential learning process.
Rather than treating the region as a destination for short-term experience, participants are encouraged to understand it as a lived environment through sustained engagement. The inclusion of both university members and local residents further broadens the scope of humanities education, fostering a shared learning community that extends beyond the university campus.
The Samcheok case demonstrates how residential humanities education can strengthen connections between universities and local communities by integrating place-based experiences with reflective learning. It also illustrates the evolving role of university libraries as educational and cultural platforms that connect academic resources with regional communities. These findings suggest that place-based residential humanities education provides a meaningful framework for rethinking humanities education and regional collaboration in the era of Glocal Universities.
