AB - This study aims to analyze the cultural characteristics of Gumi, an industrial city in Korea, from the perspective of regional cultural literacy and to propose a Korean language education model based on regional cultural literacy for international learners. Previous studies on regional culture in Korean language education have mainly focused on using local culture as instructional content or experiential learning resources. However, relatively little attention has been paid to educational approaches that systematically promote learners’ participation in local communities and cultural practices. To address this gap, this study reviews previous research on regional cultural literacy, glocal education, and place-based education, and analyzes Gumi’s industrial, historical, everyday, and community cultures to identify educational resources applicable to Korean language education. Based on these findings, this study proposes a Korean language education model grounded in regional cultural literacy and presents its educational content, teaching- learning activities, and an example of program implementation. The proposed model reconstructs regional culture as a core educational resource, integrating language learning, cultural understanding, and community participation to foster learners’ regional cultural literacy and glocal competence. Furthermore, it suggests educational possibilities for supporting international learners’ adaptation to local communities and their long-term settlement. This study is significant in that it integrates regional culture, Korean language education, glocal education, and place-based education into a systematic educational model. The findings are expected to provide a practical foundation for the development of regional Korean language education programs and future empirical research.
