ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explore the PCK required for developing professionalism in Modern Poetry Education. Based on judgment-centered instructional professionalism, teaching professionalism was conceptualized as the ability to exercise professional judgment in instructional contexts. Accordingly, professionalism in Modern Poetry Education was defined as the ability to design and implement lessons grounded in students’ literary responses. To systematize PCK as practical knowledge related to such professionalism, this study employed S -STEP. Through an abductive and iterative analysis of the teacher educator’s own nstructional practices, the study identified three components of PCK: ( 1) understanding poetic texts as interpretive educational content, ( 2) meta-interpretive competence for analyzing students’ responses, and (3) instructional design competence based on students’ literary activities. Although limited in generalizability as a single-case S-STEP study, the findings provide a practical framework for fostering professionalism in pre-service Modern Poetry Education and emphasize the need for pre-service teachers to develop PCK as a driving force of professional growth.
