AB - The purpose of this study is to empirically identify the pheno- menon of “phonological fossilization” observed in high-proficiency learners of Korean and to analyze the formation mechanisms of “articulatory metacognition” and “pedagogical content knowledge (PCK)” among immigrant female Korean language teachers who have overcome such barriers. To achieve this, the study conducted a detailed, exhaustive analysis of the National Institute of Korean Language’s Learner Spoken Corpus (6,500 words), stratified by linguistic level and category, to verify the status of pronunciation fossilization among advanced learners from Mongolian, Vietnamese, and Chinese linguistic backgrounds. Furthermore, in-depth interviews were conducted with three immigrant female Korean language teachers who have personally experienced and successfully navigated the same physical and cognitive fossilization barriers. The research results are as follows: First, unlike errors in morphology and syntax, pronunciation errors in high-proficiency learners displayed the characteristics of “phonological fossilization,” showing a stubborn persistence that does not diminish despite increased proficiency. Second, immigrant teachers successfully dismantled the physical articulatory limitations they faced in adulthood through processes of articulatory metacognition, and based on their subjective experiences of overcoming these hurdles, they constructed practical, learner-centered pronunciation PCK. Third, their innovative pronunciation teaching techniques—such as tissue- based aspiration training, finger-guided articulatory positioning, and finger-sliding visual aids for linking rules—have presented a new paradigm of “embodied cognitive linguistic prescription,” which traces and diagnoses the learners’ internal cognitive distortion paths, distinguishing them from traditional methods centered solely on the instruction of standard phonetic norms. The findings of this study can serve as foundational data for developing “PCK- based pronunciation instruction programs” that systematize the experiential assets of immigrant teachers, contributing to the establishment of practical teaching models designed to break through the barriers of fossilization for learners in a multicultural era.
