ABSTRACT

Various studies have been conducted, since the late Joseon Dynasty period, as to the polities and cultures of ethnic groups in ancient Korea. Therefore, around Ye, Maek and Han, understanding of distribution, development of the ethnic groups, and their mutual relationships with the polities were obtained, but much remains still unsolved. In particular, fundamental problems have been raised as to how literatures as well as archaeological data can be used when a certain ethnic group is identified. Serious discussions regarding the circumscription of the significance and interpretation of archaeological data have become more necessary. Even if a number of variables act on the status of the ruins and relics, the general comprehension is not objectionable that differences in ethnicity can be reflected on the mode of archeological materials. Moreover, if ethnic names are divided or classified in the contemporary literature sources, respect should be given, basically. Based on the respect, methods should be elaborated in order to examine and analyze inter-ethnic differences.
