ABSTRACT

After studied in China and America from 1885 to 1893, Yun Tchi-ho(Yun) came to Korea and promoted the Mission of Methodist Episcopal Church, South(MECS) in Gaeseong. Through the Mission of MECS Yun wanted to modernize Korea with the Gaeseong Region Merchants. Say in other words, in order to develop the agriculture and industrialize the Korea, Yun chose the Gaeseong Region Merchants to utilize their capital and abilities of management. But the South(America), defeated in Civil War, wanted to reconstruct the economy of the South. In oder to develop the economy and prevent the Blacks’ emigration, the South made an investment in Black and Africa mission. Since the resources of MECS were exhausted and they hated Chinese, the Mission of Asia were difficult and Korean Mission were more difficult. Besides korean mission in Gaeseong region was more difficult for the policies of missionaries. Missionaries wanted to take mission in Seoul and evangelize instead of setting up the schools and dispensaries. In oder to enlarge the mission of MECS in Gaeseong, Yun emigrated to Gaeseong and erect the Anglo-Korean School. Through teaching the agricultural and the industrial skill, Yun wanted to modernize korea. By the way Japanese ‘Law Governing Private Schools’ was distorted the education of skills in Anglo-Korean School. Skill for agriculture was changed into skill for factory. Also the policies of missionaries were distorted the skill education. C. H. Deal(teacher in Anglo-Korean School) changed the manual factory into machine industry. In spite of exporting the cotton textile, the machine industry was not developed the korean cotton textile industries. And Yun Participated the New People’s Society to gather the Gaeseong Region Merchants. Also Yun wanted to make them into national capitalists. But they disregarded the Yun’s efforts and went on board japanese’ appeasements in production of rice, ginseng, and loan markets. The Gaeseong Region Merchants did not want any economical damage. By the japanese’ colonial oppression, the Gaeseong Region Merchants’ self-centered minds and the egoistic missionaries’ policies, Yun’s efforts of korean modernization were failed.
