ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to investigate the effects of applying mind maps, combined with discussions and presentations in a university class. This study was conducted as part of an attempt to develop methods to instruct writing by providing an abundant amount of contents for students to improve their writing skills. Specifically integrating with mind maps and discussions, a writing instruction model prior to its construction was implemented by a writing class. The findings of the current research revealed that students’ writing ability improved in all categories, including the formation, organization, and articulation of contents. The mind map training for students had effects not only on enriching ideas, words, expressions, sentences, but fostering positive attitudes towards writing activities. Student writers tended to have difficulty planning their writing. Later, they found it easier to engage themselves in writing activities because they became accustomed to constructing the contents of writing, providing feedback on peers’ writing, and complementing one another through discussions in a cooperative way. In order to effectively deliver writing instructions in a classroom setting, instructors need to recognize the importance that their students are instructed in this method germane to writing process, and that they let student writers become fully aware of the benefits from utilizing writing strategies in writing tasks.
