ABSTRACT

This article is to clarify the issue of the one in the ancient Korean thoughts. Here, the one is what brings all things together to one. Above all, the meaning of the one is determined in the first paragraph of Chunbugyeong. The one is neither being nor non-being. Rather, it represents the entity to which both being and non-being simultaneously belong. The one is located at the center of this unification. This way we can define the one as Gi(氣). Gi is being and non-being at the same time, and as a center or core, it brings everything together into one thing. Gi can also be understood as the god whose essence lies in light. Finally, we prove the validity of these determinations through the meanings of the Korean word han (한).
