ABSTRACT

Vietnam has been influenced by the Chinese culture for thousands of years due to the geographical proximity to the Chinese border. The most representative Chinese culture that came into Vietnam is the Chinese language and Chinese characters. Confucianism was introduced along with the Chinese characters. Vietnam had been controlled by China since 111 BC. Since then, the Chinese characters have been introduced and selected as the official characters in Vietnam. Even after its independence from China, the feudal dynasties of Vietnam encouraged Vietnamese people to learn Chinese characters and confucianism. This has made the Chinese characters widespread across the country. As a result, about 70% of the Vietnamese lexicons in the modern Vietnamese language have stemmed from the Chinese language. Particularly, the Chinese character idioms in modern Vietnamese have accounted for a large percentage of the Vietnamese words. It may be due to features of idioms for delivering means more effectively than the general vocabulary while having a simple form. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the morphology and semantics of the Chinese- character idioms in Vietnamese through the study on idioms with the same shapes and meanings, idioms with different shapes and the same meanings and idioms with identical shapes and different meanings in Vietnamese and Chinese. In order to conduct the research, firstly, this study examines the origins of the Chinese-character idioms in Vietnamese, synthesize the opinions of Vietnamese linguists on the Vietnamese idioms, and defines the Chinese character idioms in Vietnamese. In comparison with the Chinese idioms, finally, this study analyzes the morphology and semantics of the Chinese character idioms in Vietnamese.
