ABSTRACT

This article aims to reexamine previous studies on the concept of freedom in Zhuangzi and reinterpret freedom with a special focus on negative freedom or non-interference in Berlin's term. Zhuangzi is a well-known classical text, which delivers the idea of freedom to the readers. The previous studies on the concept of freedom in Zhuangzi view freedom as something different from the so called Western concepts of freedom, especially different from freedom as non-interference. This article demonstrates that the interpretation of freedom in Zhuangzi as non-interference is not possible. Whether the concept of freedom in Zhuangziis unique or comparable with the Western concepts of freedom is a question to be solved through further studies.
