ABSTRACT

In this paper, the record of the Goryeo official Leegok(李穀) and the record of the Yuan official Sutianjue(蘇天爵) were reviewed in detail on the activities of Hanyeong. Hanyeong, who was from Goryeo and had a unique history of serving as a kesig(怯薛) of the emperor after moving to the Yuan Empire with his father, is a good example of the relationship between Goryeo and Yuan Empire. It is also worth paying attention to the fact that he received higher post in government than Leegok and others who passed examination of Yuan Empire. Considering that the review of figures who played the role of kesig in the relationship between Goryeo and Yuan has so far tended to be centered on king of Goryeo, Hanyeong is certainly a person who needs a detailed analysis. However, the existing perception of Hanyeong still lacks. Errors are still being found in the contents of the Encyclopedia of Korean Culture and so on, and without any specific analysis of his activities, scholars accepted the record of the error and described it as if Hanyeong had served for Goryeo king in Yuan Empire and had received Goryeo’s office. However, as we have seen in this paper, Hanyeong was faithfully performing his duties as a bureaucrat of Yuan Empire, and there are no signs of active involvement in Goryeo’s politics in both in collection of works of Leegok and Sutianjue. Therefore, careful analysis needs to be attempted while closely comparing the various historical resources.
