ABSTRACT

“Si Wu Xie” and “Zheng Sheng Yin” recorded in 「The Analects of Confucius」have been discussed a lot throughout history. The purpose of this study is to examine discussions by major researchers in the past and analyses from Confucian records, aiming to shed new light on the meanings of “Si Wu Xie” and “Zheng Sheng Yin” in the 「Analects of Confucius」. Additionally, the study seeks to explore Confucius' perception of 「Zheng Feng(鄭風)」in 「Si Jing(詩經)」. Confucius summarized 「Shi Jing」 as “Si Wu Xie”. “Si Wu Xie” comes from a phrase in 「Shi Jing」, 「Lu Song(魯頌)⋅Jiong(駉)」, which describes the pure thoughts without evil of a horse breeder. Confucius borrowed this line to comment on the author's pure thoughts, indicating that 「Shi Jing」 is a scripture that draws to one’s moral nature. Confucius also evaluated ‘Zheng Sheng(鄭聲)’ as obscene. ‘Zheng Sheng’ is new music, music that is obscene and deceives people, and is music that a ruler should not indulge in. In other words, Confucius evaluated ‘Zheng Sheng’ as obscene in order to preach the principles of discipline and governance of a ruler, and did not evaluate 「Zheng Feng」 in 「Shi Jing」 as obscene. In 「Kongzi Shilun(孔子詩論)」, Confucius paid attention to the moral capacity and political efficacy of 「Zheng Feng」. This means that Confucius recognized 「Zheng Feng」 of 「Shi Jing」 as a pure poetry without evil thoughts.
