ABSTRACT

This paper is a first step in exploring the possibility of establishing a Confucian philosophy of technology, and whether the moral character of Confucian‘s discourses on the Dao(道) and the qi(器) can be applied to the current ethical discourse of AI. In the current society organized around technology, Confucianism has not produced an adequate discourse on technology. This paper will argue that technology is an extension of human beings, and technological objects are self-expression of human existence, which is consistent with Confucianism, especially the discourses on the Dao(道) and the qi(器) of Yizhuan(易傳). In discourses on the Dao(道) and the qi(器), the metaphysical Dao (道) and the physical qi(器) coincide, and therefore, for Confucians, technology is the self-expression of human beings as a microcosm. AI is a prime example of how technology is a human self-expansion. The ultimate developmental stage of AI that technology aims for is a being that resembles or exceeds human beings. Considering the status of humans in Confucianism and the future status of AI, it is necessary to address AI as a posthuman within Confucian discourse. A number of ethical principles have already been published in relation to AI ethics. In this paper, I will discuss the limitations of existing ethical principles of AI and explore the applicability of discourses on the Dao(道) and the qi(器) based on them.
