A Qualitative Study on the Mentoring Experiences of Students Volunteers in University : Focused on Social Work Students

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to explore the mentoring experiences of social work students who are affiliated with a volunteer club in university. This study was conducted for the undergraduate school students who are affiliated with the volunteer club of the Department of Social work of H University and the data were collected by conducting five focus group interviews and analyzing the journals of their voluntary activities, which were analyzed based on the qualitative case study. In results, four themes and nine sub-themes were drawn. The four themes are as follows: 'the mentor who doesn't know what the mentoring is', 'the given mentoring experiences', 'the long-term problem, the acknowledgement limitations of mentoring and the attempt for change' and 'the growth to be mentor through new attempts and the task'. Based on the results of study, the suggestions have been made to support the mentoring activities of the volunteer club in undergraduate schools.
