ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study explores the architectural and operational characteristics of public facilities designed to support intergenerational exchange, focusing on community centers in Fukui City, Japan. It aims to identify design strategies and operational methods that effectively address challenges in aging and low-birthrate societies. Results: The analysis reveals that strategic location and flexible spatial configurations significantly enhance accessibility and foster intergenerational interaction. Community centers equipped with features such as multipurpose spaces, movable walls, and family-friendly amenities like diaper-changing stations accommodate diverse user needs. Furthermore, targeted programs such as agricultural activities, cooking workshops, and IT training were found to bridge generational gaps and promote mutual understanding. Implications: This study highlights the necessity of integrating adaptable spatial planning with community-specific program development to address demographic challenges. The findings provide actionable insights into designing public facilities that encourage intergenerational collaboration and strengthen community cohesion. These strategies are applicable not only in Japan but also in other regions facing similar societal issues, offering a framework for sustainable community development.
