ABSTRACT

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the evolution of spatial configurations in public special schools in Incheon from their inception to the present, and to propose design methods for restructuring spaces to efficiently meet future demand changes. Methods: This study investigates the facility conditions and curriculum organization of special schools in Incheon, analyzing space demands through stakeholder interviews at 3 public special schools. It also examines spatial configuration changes from the planning or design stages at 3 schools. The research concludes with an analysis of school floor plan types and explores efficient redesign and introduction of new learning spaces. Results: This study explored spatial and educational adaptations in public special schools in Incheon, highlighting a significant increase in regular classrooms without physical expansion of facilities. The findings suggest prioritizing classroom expansions to meet educational demands, often involving repurposing existing spaces. Additionally, the study also considered efficient zoning and the strategic introduction of new learning spaces in the restructuring of existing buildings. Implications: This paper reveals how architectural design techniques can accommodate the evolving social and physical needs of special schools, preparing for spatial changes over time.
