ABSTRACT

The Purpose of this study is to examine the effect of AAC(Augmentative and Alternative Communication) intervention using device and gesture on the communicative behavior in buying goods. Research design of this study is pre-and post experimental design. The subjects of intervention group were 26 students in special education school, which are the students with severe mental retardation. The students were divided into two group, device-use group and gesture-use group, based on the communicative ability and the distinguishing ability. The subjects of comparative groups were 30 residents at the welfare facility for the mental retardation. The study took steps of baseline, training and maintenance. The results from this study are as it follows. first, The ratio of execution of device-use and gesture-use group to comparative groups was shown in statistically significant advance. Second, in the maintenance step, AAC intervention effect continued in all of device-use and gesture-use group. Finally, educational implication and academical limitation were discussed.
