ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to discover practical knowledge, through the application of a Brain Education program and an action research approach, which could be used in the classroom to improve the self-concept of deaf high school students. This was a qualitative action research study, in which I was both the teacher and the researcher. The research was conducted according to a common action research process. During this process, I observed that the students became more active participants in all classroom activities. Also, I found that the students developed their own strategies which they applied to all areas of the classroom. The strategies fell into three categories: participating, having an open mind, and cooperating with the teacher and with their peers. These strategies helped the students develop a better understanding of themselves during the research process by allowing them to reflect on and change themselves. Based on the results, I concluded that through the Brain Education program and the action research process, the students became more active participants in all areas of the classroom and developed a more positive self-concept about themselves as a deaf person.
