AB - In this study, we examine the concept of Distance Support of Education (DSE) and the trends of DSE for students with hearing impairment. DSE is a service that helps students to learn without the disadvantage of living in a distant location.
Twenty four (24) students with hearing impairment in thirteen (13) Universities have real time interpreting services of sign language or stenography through the internet. At present H College is providing these services with a DSE system. The results of this study are based on a survey of sixteen (16) students who received and are using the DSE system. It was learned in this study that the students feel the most challenging part of learning is to listen to a professor’s lecture. As a whole, the students satisfaction has increased both in understanding the flow of the lecture and being more interested in the contents of the lecture. Expectations of better grades are sure to follow as we have seen an increase of student participation in class room lecture’s than before receiving the service of DSE. However, individual factors (gender, department, whether there was campus support) had no effect or change in their satisfaction.
On the other hand, when they prepared to set up and use their self supported devices, (for example, laptop computer, web-cam and internet code) before the lecture, this is when they experienced the most trouble. In order to improve these conditions, the manual that the students use to prepare this equipment must be made easier to read, understand and check to ensure their system is set up, and functioning properly. A troubleshooting flow chart would be ideal for students to use to figure out on their own the cause of their system failure. This manual and troubleshooting guide should be developed as quickly as possible for all DSE equipment and systems.
