ABSTRACT

This study aims to provide the basic data for development of art appreciation program for the visually impaired and improvement of art appreciation class as well as improvement of recognition and necessity of the visually impaired on the art education by investigating the environment of art appreciation class and recognition and requests of teachers on art appreciation education and teaching approaches using the questionnaires. The conclusion based on the results and discussion of this study is described below. In the curriculum based on the number of hours per annum designated for the appreciation in the art class in the 7th National Common Basic Curriculum, the number of hours designated for the art appreciation didn’t comply with the requirements in a school for the visually impaired. The textbooks were not properly used in most cases because of diverse problems. Apparatus and materials for art appreciation and teaching media for the visually impaired were not sufficient. The most effective approach for teaching art appreciation is the field experience using art galleries or museums. The field studies using galleries and museums were enabled the visually impaired to directly experience and appreciate the art works. And the art appreciation education was required for the visually impaired to cultivate the ability to understand cultural phenomenon in various kinds of societies to be the main agent of modern culture. The most urgent requirement was to secure a variety of teaching materials, textbooks and apparatus to effectively teach art appreciation to the visually impaired.
