ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study is to examine awareness of lifelong educationinstitute workers towards lifelong education for people with disabilities throughmetaphors analysis and find a way to vitalize lifelong education for peoplewith disabilities. Data was collected from 132 participants who are currentlyemployed at lifelong education institutes, social welfare centers, and schools intwo major metropolitan cities and two provinces and this was used for the finaldata analysis. After reviewing participants’ responses repetitively, ninety threemetaphors were withdrawn and those were conceptually categorized into fivethemes: (1) Indispensable; (2) Better life; (3) Need to continue; (4) Drivingforce of life; (5) Difficult to realize. Metaphors concerning lifelong educationfor people with disabilities differed according to workers’ occupational categoryand teaching experience to people with disabilities. This study found a varietyof awareness of lifelong education institute workers on lifelong education forpeople with disabilities. On a basis of the results, ways how to establish thefoundation of lifelong education for people with disabilities, train professionals,and develop support systems were discussed.
