AB - The purpose of this paper is to propose a future direction of the development of Korean Sign Language Dictionary. This proposal, when followed, will help the dictionary capture features of Korean Sign Language as a natural language more adequately. The proposal deals with two major aspects of sign language dictionaries: vocabulary items and lexical information. First, we propose that an appropriate change take place in the ways in which sign language vocabularies are collected, selected and represented. This change involves moving from Korean-centeredness to Korean Sign Language-centeredness in the approach to dictionary making at large. This change also involves a proper recognition of the gloss of each vocabulary entry as a mere reference to the entry. Secondly, we propose that lexical information properly include semantic, syntactic and pragmatic information.
These lexical information can be effectively provided not only by definition statements but also well thought-out example sentences. Syntactic information, in particular, must address the grammatical features unique to a sign language. These unique features include category information, locational and directional information and non-manual features. In order for us to engage in an adequate collection of these unique features, a corpus-based data collection is a must. If and when these proposals are implemented thoroughly and faithfully, the future sign language dictionary is believed to contribute to solidifying the identity of Korean Sign Language as a natural language independent from Korean.
