AB - Old maps of Dokdo are records with the physical specificities of a map while also holding historical meanings and evidencial values as ancient writings. Therefore more detail and meaningful descriptions are needed than other general records. However, in comparison to the high interest in these maps, there is a lack of systematic and integrative descriptions. Hence, this study aimed to propose the description elements of the old maps of Dokdo holding evidential values. For this purpose, first, literature reviews and the characteristics of the old maps of Dokdo were analyzed. Next, for determining description elements using institutions that possess old maps of Dokdo, case studies were conducted in 12 domestic and foreign institutions and compared the rules of ISAD(G). The final description elements were suggested by reflecting on the evaluation of five experts in old maps. Fifty description elements in a total of 8 areas - identity areas, context areas, content and structure areas, conditions of access and use areas, allied materials areas, note areas, description control areas, and other areas were proposed.
