ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to develop survey items for use in a national survey on the status of reading education in elementary and secondary schools. To this end, domestic and international status surveys related to reading education and reading-related survey instruments were analyzed, interviews with experts were conducted, and a questionnaire survey was administered to 6,701 students and teachers at elementary and secondary schools under two metropolitan and provincial offices of education. The results were as follows. First, no national-level survey that directly examines the status of reading education was found in Korea. Second, in other countries, the school library domain was included as a survey area when reading surveys were conducted. Third, four questionnaires were finally developed: one for teachers in charge of reading education, consisting of 40 items in four domains; one for homeroom teachers, consisting of 31 items in four domains; one for middle and high school students, consisting of 28 items in six domains; and one for elementary school students, consisting of 24 items in six domains. By conducting a survey on the status of reading education in conjunction with the survey on the status of school libraries, this study can serve as a basis for a survey system that regularly identifies the status of reading education at the national level.
