ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine nursing students’ knowledge, attitudes, empathy, filial responsibility, and attitudes toward caring for older adults, as well as to identify correlations among these variables and factors influencing attitudes toward elder care. Participants were 127 undergraduate nursing students enrolled at a nursing college located in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Data were collected via a Google online questionnaire from April 7 to May 16, 2025, and analyzed using SPSS Statistics 25.0. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and multiple regression analyses were conducted. According to the analysis of differences by general characteristics, attitudes toward elder care significantly differed by age (t = -2.766, p = .007), participation in elderly experience activities (t = -2.620, p = .010), and completion of elderly-related education programs (t = -2.360, p = .020). Attitudes toward elder care showed significant positive correlations with attitudes toward older adults (r = .432, p < .01), empathy (r = .297, p < .01), and filial responsibility (r = .616, p < .010). Factors influencing attitudes toward elder care were attitudes toward older adults (β = .158, p < .05), empathy (β = - .153, p < .05), and filial responsibility (β = .462, p < .01), which together explained 43.7% of the variance. These findings may serve as a basis for establishing educational strategies to enhance nursing students’ positive attitudes toward elderly care.
