ABSTRACT

For the development of the anti-obesity compounds from natural sources, the tests was carried out with Korean Traditional Medicinal Plants (KTMP) by inhibitory activity of pancreatic lipase enzyme assay with porcine pancreatic lipase (type VI-S, porcine pancreas from Sigma). Among the 131 Korean traditional medicinal plants, 33 KTMP extracts exhibited a significant inhibitory activity against pancreatic lipase in in vitro study. The methanol extracts of four KTMP namely, Areca catechu, Rheum undulatum, Orostachys japonicus, and Cibotium barometz, exhibited strong in vitro anti-lipase activity above 60% at the 100㎍/ml concentration. Particularly, the methanol extract of Rheum undulatum showed highest pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity as 72.0% followed by Cibotium barometz (70.2%) which were higher than orlistat at the 0.495㎍/ml concentration as positive control. The other 6 kinds of KTMP (Curcuma zedoaria, Rubia akane, Sanguisorba officinalis, Curcuma longa Linn, Artemisia scoparia and Omphalia lapidescens) also showed the over 40% of pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity. To the best of our knowledge, many KTMP have been screened for their pancreatic lipase inhibitory activity in the previously report. However, it’s too small study compared to the entire KTMP. Therefore, our results provide the more valuable information for studied the anti-obesity compounds from Korean traditional medicinal plants.
