A Study on Methodology of the Integration Dance Therapy ―focusing on the integration of literature, music and meditation elements―

The integrative approach combining dance and other arts is able to function as an efficient and timely psychological therapy in the modern society where complexity is significantly high. In this study, the methodology on integration dance therapy is theoretically investigated with a focus on literature, music and meditation elements based on the concept of integration arts therapy. The purpose of this study is to suggest the theoretical grounds for the integrated approach to maximize the effects of dance therapy amid the growing popularity of integration dance therapies and identify corresponding specific methodologies. The methodology of integration dance therapy is found out to have the following implications in the three different respects of literature, music and meditation elements. First, the three elements of literature, music and meditation apply to the integration dance therapy based on respectively different principles. Second, the strength of other art media is relevant to the complementary therapeutical roles which can help fill the loopholes of dance therapies. Third, the approach based on the integration of literature and dance can help patients materialize their thoughts and emotions and demonstrate them with physical movements using a variety of literature genres, including diary, drama, poem, letter, and news article, in proper manners in addition to the application of 'epic' with 'dance work epic' to treatment. Fourth, the approach based on the integration of music and dance can help maximize the expressions of movements through emotional musical experiences and promote the voluntary physical demonstrations through improvised performances in addition to the integrated approaches based on music and other various elements such as rhythm, beat, accent, melody, tone, tempo, and dynamics. Fifth, the approach based on the integration of meditation and dance can feature a phased program consisting of preparation, progress, development and finalization phases based on a variety of dance meditation theories. As dance has the characteristics of an integrated art, the dance therapy can generate a satisfying effect in terms of the gender, age, symptom and preference of the subjects if the elements of dance moves and those of other art media are appropriately combined.

역사적으로, 서민들을 위해 추어왔던 한국 탈춤은 상징적인 탈의 이미지를 통해 표현하는 표현예술이다. 탈춤은 서민들에 의해 추어져온 가장 극적인 요소를 지니고 있고, 춤을 추는 과정에서 공연자들은 즉흥적인 동작을 통해 관객들과 동시성과 정신적인 단결성을 통해 그룹적인 리듬을 유도하고, 관객들은 공연자들의 즉흥적인 춤, 연기, 그리고 노래에 몰입을 하게 된다. 때로는 관객은 탈춤을 통해 개인적인 사건을 감정이입 시키고 반영한다. 이러한 자신 내면의 적극적인 감정이입과 반영의 경험은 결과적으로 자신의 문제와 사건들에 대한 감정을 해소시키고 방출시키는 기회를 갖기도 한다. 다시 말해서, 공연자는 즉흥(Improvisation)을 통해 그때 상황에 맞는 춤사위와 대사로 관객들과 소통한다는 점이다. 공연자는 적극적인 관객참여를 끌어 들임으로써 관객들과 하나가 되는 공동체 의식을 느끼게 하고, 그 순간 관객들은 자신의 문제를 방출시키고(Empathic Reflection), 모든 스트레스로부터 잠시 해방감을 맛보는 치유적인 정서를 가지게 된다. 그것은 궁극적으로 공연자와 관객과의 단결성으로 발전되고, 이러한 동시성과 단결성(Synchrony & Cohesion)은 무용/동작 치료의 선구자 마리안 체이스(Marian Chace)의 치료적 방법에서 그룹 활동(group activity)과 일맥상통하는데, 즉 내담자와 치료사 사이에 즉흥적인 움직임을 통해 분위기가 고조되고 점점 하나의 공동체 의식으로 전환되면서 동시성과 정신적인 단결성(Synchrony and Cohesion)을 가짐으로써 자신의 문제를 지지받는다는 감정을 느끼게 되고, 그 과정에서 진정성 있는 자기반영(emotional reflection)을 표출함으로써 자기문제를 해소하는 치료적 요소를 내포하고 있다. 탈춤은 무용/동작치료에서 주요 치료적 요소인 즉흥성, 상징성, 동시성, 단결성 그리고 자기반영이라는 것과 동일시된다. 특히, 한국 탈춤의 즉흥적 움직임을 통한 관객들과의 직접적인 상호작용은 무용/동작 치료에서 본질적으로 다루고 있는 무의식적 움직임에서 인간의 내적 태도의 단서를 찾아내고, 그것을 치료하는 과정에서 사용할 수 있다는 근간을 제공한다. 탈춤은 한국에서 가장 대중적이고 잘 알려진 공연예술 분야에 하나일 것이다. 이 연구는 한국의 전통적인 탈춤이 지니는 무용/동작치료(Dance/Movement Therapy)적인 요소를 살펴봄으로써 우리나라 전통적인 춤, 즉 탈춤에 대해 좀 더 광범위한 학문적 자료로서 제공되길 기대한다.

A Study on Perspective of Body Presenting in Wayne Mcgregor's 「Entity」-Focusing on Deleuze's 'bodies without organ' and 'disjointed ptactice'-

This study is about the perspective of body shown in <Entity>, the work of Wayne Mcgregor, which is based on the concepts of Girlles Deleuze (1925~1995) such as "bodies without organ" and "disjointed practice". For McGregor, the dancer’s body is not used as a means to develop a story or to express emotion, but the beginning point of a work or a work itself. What he focused on dance art is the mechanism of human body and continues to the mechanism of movements. For him bodies of dancers are different from the bodies which are seen often in everyday life or on the dance performance stage. They are undefined bodies which are having unlimited potential and freedom, and “bodies without organ” which are free from organic order. His dancers are beyond the frames that are confined in human bodies and usual dance performances through the unlimited disjointed practices. So his dancers are showing the different aspects of body with unfamiliar and unusual movements. This is a performance which is beyond the fixed idea about the organic order of body or the usual dance performance. This idea about dancers' body roots from the thought that is willing to doubt in the stable order and exceed established knowledge. The undefinable dancers' body forces to think in a new way. The unfamiliar world represented by the unfamiliar body is showing the undefinable world throwing doubt on what we see and what we know. Through the process of fragmenting and reconstructing of dancers' body, McGregor's work increases the boundary and possibility of dance art. He makes to throw the doubt in unwavering belief and knowledge and to divert of thinking by swimming against natural movements and automatic reactions. McGregor's work which researches the possibility of human body forces to rethink about human being and shows the new meaning of dance art.

Dancing Body in Digital Image Era

This study focuses on the changes of corporeality which is secured when dance utilizes digital technology as art that takes the human body as the primary tool in order to analyze the meaning of media aesthetics which a dancer’s body and movement have in this age of digital image. Various kinds of ‘digital imaging technology’ being used in the mediation of dance determine the formality and messages of today’s art of dance. This researcher intends to focus on the fact that such status of mediation precipitates the dancing body in the art of dance to either extinction or extension. Currently, the digital mediation in contemporary dance shows the aspects of technological expression to ‘digitalize’ and ‘visualize’ chiefly dance or dancers. Here, if the most basic mediation technology to digitalize movement is motion capture, visualizing those data can be realized through animation and image projection. And to that, real-time mapping and interaction are added in order to produce the new-dimensional body and movement of dancers freed from corporeality. The digital mediation of dance through motion capture, animation, and image projection reconstructs the dancer’s body into the machine-body adopting digital technology, the digitalized body information into the animated image-body, and that into the space-body to which digitalized body informatiㅁon is projected. The digitalized body liquefies unitary corporeality as the organism of the dancer’s body and movement and has intercorporeality with objects outside the body, weakens the dancer’s intelligence and arouses tactual illusion, and deconstructs and reconstructs the body. By capturing and digitalizing the dancer’s body and making it an image through animation to project it to the space, the dancer’s body is duplicated, edited, and fragmented by technology, and at the same time, it is desubjectivated and decontextualized from the subject’s socio-cultural background. The dancer’s digitalized movement of the body should be seen from new digital corporeality, not the mere extension or extinction of it.

A Study on the Relationship of Dance Program Participation Motivation, Participation Satisfaction and Sustained Participation Intention among Elderly Women

The purpose of this study was to examine whether appropriate motivating would determine the satisfaction level and sustained participation intention of female elderly dance program participants. And it's also meant to investigate the relationship among their participation motivation, participation satisfaction and sustained participation intention in an attempt to provide some information on the revitalization of dance programs for the elderly. The subjects in this study were 174 elderly women who participated in dance programs. After a survey was conducted to investigate their participation motivation, participation satisfaction and sustained participation intention, the collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS PASW 20.0. A correlation analysis was made to look for the correlation of the variables, and a multiple regression analysis was carried out. The findings of the study were as follows:First, as a result of analyzing the correlation among participation motivation, participation satisfaction and sustained participation intention, it's found that some variables of participation motivation were correlated to participation satisfaction and sustained participation intention, and every subvariable of participation satisfaction had a close correlation to sustained participation intention. Second, as a result of investigating the influence of participation motivation on participation satisfaction by making a regression analysis, health-oriented motivation that was one of the subvariables of participation motivation was found to have a positive impact on educational satisfaction. Hobby/amusement-oriented motivation positively affected physical satisfaction and facility satisfaction, and self- development motivation exerted a positive influence on psychological satisfaction, educational satisfaction and facility satisfaction. Family- oriented motivation had a positive impact on educational satisfaction and social satisfaction, and socializing-oriented motivation exercised a positive influence on social satisfaction. In contrast, health-oriented motivation exerted a negative influence on facility satisfaction, and family-oriented motivation had a negative impact on physical satisfaction. Socializing- oriented motivation negatively affected educational satisfaction. Third, as a result of checking the impact of participation motivation on sustained participation intention by making a regression analysis, hobby/amusement-oriented motivation, self-development motivation and family-oriented motivation that were the subvariables of participation motivation were found to exert a positive influence on sustained participation intention. On the contrary, health-oriented motivation negatively affected sustained participation intention, and society-oriented motivation made no statistically significant differences to sustained participation intention. Fourth, as a result of analyzing the influence of participation satisfaction on sustained participation intention by making a regression analysis, facility satisfaction and physical satisfaction that were the subvariables of participation satisfaction were found to affect sustained participation intention in a positive way, and psychological satisfaction, social satisfaction and educational satisfaction made no statistically significant differences to sustained participation intention. The findings of the study illustrated that the participation motivation of the elderly women who participated in dance programs affected their own participation satisfaction and sustained participation intention, and that their participation satisfaction impacted on sustained participation intention. Therefore it's important above all to stir up the hobby/ amusement motivation and self-development motivation of elderly women in order to encourage them to keep participating in dance programs, and what matters equally is to boost their physical satisfaction and facility satisfaction.
