ABSTRACT

This study examines the aesthetic characteristics of Seungmu, the Korean dance, from the perspectiveof Lao Tzu’s philosophy, focusing on the fact that the concept of Lao Tzu and Chan Tzu had been widelyspread in not only in East Asian but also in Korea. Lao Tzu’s ideas and nothingness are connected to the emptiness and blankness of Seungmu, hisunintentional action are connected to the natural beauty of Seungmu, and his beinglessness is connectedto the dance euigyung. In addition, the paper confidently argues that there was a common artistic value between the simpleand unostentatious minds of Seungmu, who mastereds the moral spirit suggested by Lao Tzu. Thepurpose of this study is to expand the artistic value and category of Korean dance and to broaden thescope of the Korean dance aesthetics by approaching the subject of Lao Tzu’s philosophy.
