ABSTRACT

This paper examines Jesper Just’s multi-channel video installations, focusing on how they reveal narrative indeterminacy and reconfigure the agency of the spectator in connection with Gilles Deleuze’s concept of the “time-image.” While the original theory of the time-image emphasized the dissolution of causal sequences and the perceptual gaps in single-screen cinema, this study applies the concept beyond a specific medium to Just’s installations, which integrate visual, auditory, and spatial dimensions. His works employ multiple screens and dispersed spatial arrangements that allow viewers to move freely, yet this physical mobility does not lead to narrative closure or emotional immersion. Instead, spectators encounter fragmented images and disjointed sounds that suspend judgment, generating a perceptual condition resonant with Deleuze’s notion of the seer. By analyzing this tension between the viewer’s physical freedom and the cognitive structure of the time-image, this paper argues that Just’s practice provides a concrete case that demonstrates how the time-image operates in the context of contemporary visual art.
