“Yin and Xiu” Rhetoric Techniques Extracted from the Text of Liu Xie’s《Wen Xin Diao Long》

ABSTRACT

The text of Liu Xie’s 《Wen Xin Diao Long》 is the most influential text in the history of Chinese literature critique as well as the theory of literature, Chinese writing and rhetorics after him. 《Wen Xin Diao Long》is not only the most influential theory of literal writing and critique but also the sentences expressed in his《Wen Xin Diao Long》themselves are master pieces and the example text of rhetorics. In the chapter <Yin Xiu> of Liu Xie’s 《Wen Xin Diao Long》he explained the rhetoric technique regarding <Yin> and <Xiu> in great detail. The rhetoric technique <Yin> can be summerized into the modern rhetoric “Qu Zhe”, “Wei Ci”, “Tun Tu”, and “Han Xu” and the rhetoric technique <Xiu> can be expressed “Ying Chen”, “Shi Xian”, “Ceng Di”, and “Ding Zhen”. Therefore, in this article it is explained <Yin Xiu> expressed in Liu Xie’s 《Wen Xin Diao Long》by applying “Yin” and “Xiu” in <Yin Xiu> of Liu Xie’s 《Wen Xin Diao Long》 into the modern rhetoric terms.
