ABSTRACT

This essay starts from a personal anecdote with Bill Nienhauser, followed by a critical analysis of Shen Jiji’s The Tale of Lady Ren by briefing comparing with Edward H. Schafer’s The Divine Woman as well as the medieval narrative story. Although the world of men and women is not mutually exclusive, they have a crack. Male protagonist can enter the world of Lady Ren with ease whereas it is difficult for females to enter the secular world. The implicit connotation of Lady Ren’s white clothes is also examined, which it is associated with funeral in the literature of the Tang Dynasty. The first date of lovers is then analyzed with the motif of the mythic, divine, holy and sacred, alongside Western narrative theory and Hans Peter Duerr’s concept of ethics.
