ABSTRACT

There have been many changes in the Form of Chinese characters from Oracle Bone Inscriptions until now. This article analyzes the changes in the Form of Chinese characters from Oracle Bone Inscriptions to Seal Script, focusing on Temporary Grapheme(不成文). Temporary Grapheme can be divided into the following two types. (1)Temporary Pictogrm(象形符號): Graphic Symbols of the shape of specific things (2)Temporary Indicator(指事符號): Indicative symbols which express Abstract concepts or Forms that are difficult to imitate in concrete. In this article, Temporary Grapheme in the compound pictographs(合體象形) such as 果, 胃 and 眉 or the compound Indicators(合體指事) such as 本, 末 and 亦 were almost all maintains an Temporary Grapheme state from Oracle Bone Script to Seal Script, and is excluded from the analysis object. In addition, the analysis of 10 cases showed that from Oracle Bone Script to Seal Script, Temporary Pictogram were replaced by Ideo/Phonic Grapheme(表意/表音字素) or added with Phonetic Element(聲符). The reason seems to be because it can express the meaning more clearly. Furthermore, from the perspective of Simplification of Chinese characters, in the case of 利 character, as the character is simplified from Oracle Bone Script [the image of holding a sheaf of rice(禾) grown from the soil(土) with a hand(又) and cutting it with a knife(刀)] to Seal Script , there are cases where the original meaning is also misunderstood or changed from the “benefit(利益)” to “sharp(鋒利)” like the analysis of 『ShuoWen JieZi』.
