ABSTRACT

Matteo Ricci writing activities in China during the 16th century can be considered the starting point for the transliteration of foreign place names. The transliterations created during this period continued to influence Chinese literature until the 19th century and also had an impact on the Chinese cultural sphere, including Korea and Japan. This paper aims to explore the influence of China by measuring the similarities between the foreign place name notations recorded in Wei Yuan's Haiguotuzhi, published in China after the Opium War, and those in the Japanese government document Beiokairanjikki. The similarity measurement was categorized into continental names, country names, city names, and natural names. The methods of notation were classified into four categories: matching notations, recombination of phonetic elements, Japanese coined terms, and Katakana notation, and statistics were compiled accordingly. The results of the similarity measurement revealed that the names of continents and countries in both texts were directly borrowed from Chinese place names or reassembled phonetic elements. In contrast, the names of cities and natural features showed a diminishing Chinese influence, with a trend towards using Katakana notation instead of Chinese characters.
