ABSTRACT

The “Manzhou(滿洲)/Northeast(東北)” region entered the “Cold War” from “colonialism”, facing major changes in the way of governance and lifestyle. However, it is difficult to find an attempt in literary research to consider the transition to “Manchukuo(滿洲國)” and “People's Republic of China(新中國)” from a continuous perspective. As a regional literature, the study of Northeast literature is separated from the era of “Manchukuo”and “People's Republic of China”. Guan Monan(關沫南, 1919〜2003) is a writher who can be introduced as a link to continuous insight into literature in the Northeast during this transition period. Guan Monan was a representative writer who steadily engaged in literary creation from ‘Manchukuo’ to ‘New China’. His literary creative life can be seen from the angles of “Harbin Left-wing Literature Incident(哈爾濱左翼文學事件)”, “Hanglian Literature(抗聯文學)”, and “A writer from ethnic minorities”. After serving three years in prison in 1941 for “Harbin Left-wing Literature Incident”, he wrote a full-fledged “Hanglian Novel”, which depicts the history of the struggle between the underground Communist Party organization and the anti-Japanese Democratic Alliance after the founding of “New China”. In the 1980s and 1990s, as local cultural research was activated, he was evaluated as a writer from a minority ethnic group, providing an opportunity for his work to be newly evaluated. His novels “兩船家” (1939) and “地下的春天”(1940) reproduce the appearance of capitalists and large cities in the 1930s and 40s, depicting class conflicts and the gap between the rich and the poor, and “仇敵”(1946) and “鵝頭與李海”(1947) depict the psychological process of entering the anti-Japanese guerrilla force through a comparison between the father's generation and the son's generation. In the novels “紫花與紅葉”(1979) and “哈爾濱之夜”(1980), the appearance of basement activities is described in detail, and the lives of individuals sacrificed for the cause and their anguish and reflection are more clearly revealed. Various studies and analysis are needed in the future for Guan Monan's literary creation.
