ABSTRACT

In the technology-centered era, the language production behavior of digital platforms is useful in understanding the cultural tastes of modern people. Online fandom can be said to be a representative form of popular culture that exhibits such aspects. Accordingly, this study focuses on the female-centered CP Fan fandom that focuses on virtual pairings of the same sex (male and male). The specific object and purpose of the study is to derive the characteristics of the digital texts used in the post by Chaohua on Weibo of China's BTS 'Kuk/Min' CP Fan and the collectivity shown in it. The followings are research questions. First, what are the most frequently used adjectives and verbs to express emotions and sympathy? Second, what are the main characteristics of the adjectives and verbs extracted in 1)? Third, from the results of 1) and 2), what kind of collectivity does the same-sex CP Fan online fandom aim for? In addition, the research methodology utilizes both quantitative methodology for data collection and qualitative methodology for data interpretation. The former uses ‘text mining’ through ‘natural language processing’ to analyze digital data. In order to derive the collectivity of fandom based on data analysis, Michel Maffesoli's discussion is adopted as the theoretical background of qualitative research methodology as the latter. This study, which analyzes the linguistic behavior and characteristics of women who create new online fandom culture, will serve as a foundation for expanding the object and scope of fandom culture.
