ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the development and identity formation processes of Chinese hip-hop music by examining the subcultural characteristics inherent in its lyrics and drawing on theories of youth subculture and post-subculture. Employing text analysis techniques on representative hip-hop lyrics from 2000 to 2022, the research delves into the evolution of subcultural features—from early Western imitation to a critical engagement with Chinese traditional cultural elements and social realities, as well as the processes of commercialization and integration into mainstream culture. The findings indicate that Chinese hip-hop lyrics, over time, manifest various subcultural expressions such as resistance, politicization, and individualization, thereby serving as a vital cultural medium through which young people articulate their identities and respond to social inequality. This study is expected to contribute to the understanding of the characteristics and development trends of youth subcultures in China, as well as changes in the subcultural characteristics of Chinese hip-hop within the global cultural context.
