AB - Thepapertracesthespeedy,ruthlessconstructionacrossthecountrybythe 1960’sKoreangovernmentledbythemilitaryleadersafterthecoup(the so-called‘bulldozerstate’)andarguesthattheirideology,highmodernism (or obsessivebeliefinprogress,production,andindulgenceinline)originatingfrom Europe(GermanyduringtheWWI),flowedtoKoreathroughManchukuo. TheimprintofManchkuowasindelibleinKoreanconstructionintermsof highmoderndesign,militaryleadership,andtheirexperienceintheManchukuo ArmybuiltbyJapanese.Butthespeedandscaleofdigging,drilling,reclaiming,greeninginKoreasurpassedthoseinManchukuo.Sincetheformermobilizedits resourcesfrom boththegovernmentaldriveandthesupportofpeopletojump from themaximum povertylevel,itcanbelabeledas‘livelihoodhighmodernism’,differingfrom atraitoftheJapaneseconstructionforthelastseveraldecades(largelyridiculedas‘togenstate’,onedrivenbythecomplicityofpoliticians,businessmen,andYakuza).
