AB - This study investigated pre-service elementary teachers’ levels of understanding of NOS, the structural characteristics of their conception networks. Survey data were collected from 153 first-year preservice teachers and analyzed using two frameworks: the universal NOS framework and the Reconceptualized Family Resemblance Approach to NOS (RFN). Responses were categorized into proficiency levels, RFN elements were identified, and Epistemic Network Analysis (ENA) was conducted to visualize network structures. Major findings include that preservice teachers generally demonstrated novice or mixed levels of NOS understanding. Although they showed relatively higher awareness of the tentativeness of scientific knowledge and the design of inquiry, they exhibited lower understanding of empiricism, the distinction between observation and inference, the difference between theory and law, and the socio-cultural embeddedness of science. RFN analysis further indicated a strong emphasis on cognitive-epistemic system elements, with limited recognition of socio-institutional elements. Based on these results, this study underscores structured NOS-focused preservice teacher education, and the development of more comprehensive research instruments.
