AB - The purpose of this study is to examine the moderating role and conditional indirect effect of respect for human rights in the relationships among social withdrawal, loneliness, and self-esteem in multicultural adolescents. Data from 1,767 multicultural middle school students in the 5th (2023) and 6th (2024) waves of the Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study Phase II (MAPS II) were analyzed using latent moderated structural equation modeling. The results are as follows. First, social withdrawal perceived by multicultural adolescents had a significant negative direct effect on their self-esteem and a significant negative indirect effect on self-esteem through loneliness. Second, only the moderated indirect effect was significant in the relationships among social withdrawal, loneliness, and self-esteem, and this negative indirect effect increased when respect for human rights was low. These findings suggest the importance of building an environment that respects multicultural human rights, in addition to considering the psychological characteristics of multicultural adolescents, to enhance their self-esteem.
