ABSTRACT

John Urry's seminal work of 'the tourist gaze' has attracted much attentions from tourism scholars over the last 25 years. Various kinds of criticisms on the tourist gaze were also made by different scholars from different point of view. However, the Urry's original work and the criticisms were limited in the sense that they were all based on a fieldwork of specific country and focused on a certain type of tourist. Based on the Erik Cohen's typology of tourist, this study proposed a more comprehensive model of tourist gaze. According the model, the importance of gaze and behavior might be different from the five types of tourist. For example, to the recreational and diversionary tourists, who travel to a familiar destination of their country, behavior aspects of the travel might be more important than the gaze. The new synthesis also suggested that the power relationship between the gaze of the tourists and local residents might be different among the five different types of tourist. Finally, it proposed external variables that impact on the gaze might among be different among the five types of tourists.
